Associate in Arts Degree with Emphasis in Literary Studies

The Associate in Arts degree with Emphasis in Literary Studies provides students with exposure to the subject areas identified as most central to the field of literary studies.  The emphasis also focuses on the likely requirements of an English major at most Minnesota four-year colleges and universities.

To complete the Associate in Arts degree with Emphasis in Literary Studies, students must complete the requirements for the Associate in Arts in Liberal Education and the emphasis requirements as indicated below.  Emphasis requirements may also be used to satisfy the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum Goal requirements.

Required courses:  (11 cr)

  OR ENGL 2151   American Literature 2
ENGL 2160    British Writers 1
  OR ENGL 2161   British Writers 2

Complete two elective courses:
Note:  Any American and British literature courses taken beyond the three required courses above can count toward the two electives.

Mission Statement

The English Department believes the insights and skills gained through the study of writing and literature are essential to a liberal arts education, to success in the working world, and to effective communication in all career fields. This belief underlies the faculty's teaching, research and service.

The department offers a complete selection of lower division courses for a major in English and related areas such as rhetoric and composition, speech and communication, business, journalism, and other majors.

In addition, many students take English courses to develop personal skills, to enhance career opportunites, or to explore an interest in literature and writing.
