Associate in Arts Degree with Music Emphasis
While completing the necessary courses for an Associate of Art degree the student will also complete the following music courses:
Required courses: (28 credits)
MUSC 1131, 1132, 2231, 2232 - Music Theory I, II, III, and IV
MUSC 1181, 1182, 2281, 2282 - Ear Training I, II, III, and IV
* MUSC 1151 (two semesters) - Applied Music
* MUSC 1152 (two semesters) - Performance Class
Complete one music ensemble course: (two semesters* for 2 credits):
MUSC 1113, 1116, 1118, 1141, 1142, 1143, 1144, 1145 or 1146

* Most colleges and universities require four semesters of Applied Music, Performance Class and Performing Ensemble. The student who elects to complete only two semesters may be behind upon transfer.
** Most colleges and universities require four semesters of Music History. It is to your advantage to complete four semesters at Normandale. (MUSC 1121, 2245, 2246, 2247).
Associate in Fine Arts Degree in Music
While completing the courses in six goals of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (including goal 1) the student will also complete the following Music courses:
Required courses: (38 cr)
MUSC 1131, 1132, 2231, 2232 - Music Theory I, II, III, and IV
MUSC 1181, 1182, 2281, 2282 - Ear Training I, II, III, and IV
MUSC 1151 (four semesters) - Applied Music (Primary instrument or Voice)
MUSC 1152 (four semesters) - Performance Class
Complete two music history courses:
MUSC 1121, 2245, 2246 or 2247 (two semesters) - Music History
Complete one music ensemble course:
MUSC 1113, 1116, 1118, 1141, 1142, 1143, 1144 , 1145 or 1146 - Music Ensembles (four semesters)
Piano Proficiency

General Education Requirements: (30 credits)
Complete 30 credits from at least six goals of the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, including Goal 1.
Other Graduation Requirements:
* Complete the specific major requirements.
* Earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 or higher for coursework completed at Normandale.
* Earn 50 of the 64 credits at Normandale (earn 41 credits at Normandale if 9 credits have been
transferred in from other Minnesota State Colleges and Universities)
OR
Earn 20 of the last 28 credits at Normandale (earn 11 credits at Normandale if 9 of the last 28 credits have been transferred in from other Minnesota State Colleges and Universities).
* File a graduation application during the first month of the semester you plan to complete your coursework.

Mission Statement
The Music department offers the complete first two years of a music major curriculum. Students may transfer as third year Music students in Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Music or Bachelor of Music Education degree programs.
The student may select one of two degrees in Music, the AA with Music Emphais, or the AFA in Music. Careers related to this major include Music Teaching, Music Therapy, Performance, Composition, Conducting, Church Music and Music Business.
