The Normandale Library has arranged to have a very brief trial period for the Children’s Literature Comprehensive Database.

It contains reviews from several dozen quality sources, such as BookList , KIRKUS, and Horn Book. In addition, it gives access to a variety of teaching tools and lesson plans, and also offers a number of search options, such as limiting by subject, age level, genre, and others. It also contains links to nearly 150,000 web pages featuring authors and illustrators.

We are only able to offer access from ON-CAMPUS, and the trial will only run from August 25 until August 31, so please check it out at your earliest convenience and give us your feed-back and recommendations.

At Last !!!  Students will actually be able to SEE what is being projected on the screen in L3711 during Library User Education sessions!  Over the summer, IT installed a full multi-media station in the lab and now material that is projected on the screen will be visible throughout the room, rather than only in the front row or two.

Library Faculty members use the Library Lab to give more than 125 classes each year on the use of library databases and other resources, and in addition, an increasing number of other faculty also use the Lab for instruction and computer access.  There has long been a pressing need for adequate projection equipment in the Lab, and we finally have it!

Faculty may schedule library instruction through Faculty Librarians Tom Tollman or Carol Johnson.

Library Computer Lab (L3711)

The primary use of the Computer Lab in the Library is for library instruction classes.  When no classes are scheduled, the room will normally be available from 9AM-1PM (M-F) for use by students who need access to a computer.

Computers in L3711 are on the Normandale student network and require the same sign-in  as the machines in the Computer Center on the third floor of the College Services building. These machines have MS Office software, including MS Word and PowerPoint, and also have access to a black-and-white laser printer.

Classes always take precedence in this room, and students who are not in such classes will need to be prepared to leave at least five minutes before a class begins.

New Databases have been added:
  • Chronicling America
Chronicling America is a Website providing access to information about historic newspapers and select digitized newspaper pages, and is produced by the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). NDNP, a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC), is a long-term effort to develop an Internet-based, searchable database of U.S. newspapers with descriptive information and select digitization of historic pages.
This site allows you to search and view newspaper pages from 1880-1910 and find information about American newspapers published between 1690-present.
  • Health Sciences: A SAGE Full-Text Collection - The full text of 26 journals published by SAGE and participating societies.
  • MinnPost.com - Provides news and analysis Monday through Friday, based on reporting by professional journalists, most of whom have decades of experience in the Twin Cities media. The site features high-quality video and audio, as well as written stories. It also includes commentary pieces from the community, and comments from readers on individual stories. The site will not endorse candidates for office or publish unsigned editorials representing an institutional position. We encourage broad-ranging, civil discussion from many points of view.

A New Journal has been added to the JSTOR archive database:

Coleopterists Society Monographs. Patricia Vaurie Series (Biological Sciences; Life Sciences)
The Coleopterists Society Monographs publishes research on the systematics of beetles.
Beetles, the insect order Coleoptera, are one of the dominant forms of life on earth. One of every five described species of all animals or plants is a beetle! Various species live in nearly every habitat except the open sea, and for every possible kind of food, there's probably at least one beetle species that eats it. Beetles appeared even before the dinosaurs existed, and now they greatly outnumber the descendants of the dinosaurs, modern birds. Coleoptera includes beneficial and pest species, beautiful and plain, huge and tiny. They have even had a role in human culture, most notably the ancient Egyptians who revered the sacred scarab as a symbol of life and rebirth.
Coleopterists are people who study beetles and their habits, and this Society welcomes any and all who share our passion in any pursuit of knowledge or appreciation of all things beetle. The Coleopterists Society Monographs are fully refereed and published once per year in December by The Coleopterists Society.
