What is Service-Learning?
Service-Learning is a teaching and learning method that connects meaningful community service experiences with academic learning, personal growth and civic responsibility. Students engage in community activities that benefit their partners/agency clients while developing a sense of connection between classroom instruction and real-life situations.
What kinds of service can I do?
There are many different options for course-integrated service through classes in Sociology, Spanish, Ethics, Nursing, Reading, Math, Health, Anthropology, Communication and many more.
How can I participate?
Sign up for Sociology 1103, Service-Learning and Community Awareness, for 2 to 3 credits. Sign up for courses offering a service component. Ask your instructor on the first class day if he or she would be interested in offering credit for service-learning related to the course curriculum. Talk with students who have been service-learners. Contact Wanda Kanwischer, Service-Learning Director, 952-487-8123, or e-mail wanda.kanwischer@normandale.edu, for more information.
Where can I use the credits I've earned through Service-Learning?
You can apply credits toward several Normandale two-year degrees and certificates, and to several four-year degrees at area colleges and universities which utilize the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC).
In which community agencies or settings would I be working, as a service-learner?
There are many possibilities. Here are a few examples:
- Bridging A non-profit Bloomington organization which provides household furnishings to economically disadvantaged families in transition
- Cornerstone A community-based agency which serves victims of domestic violence from several area communities
- America Reads and America Counts Programs which help at-risk students
succeed in reading, literacy and math

How do I know if Service-Learning is right for me?
If your degree plan needs credit to fulfill MnTC goal 9, or if the program you are studying toward uses Service-Learning as elective credit, Service-Learning may be a wonderful way to enhance your college experience. It also provides activity that is well worth putting on your resume. If that isnt enough, the smile that you put on someone elses face is probably more important than anything else.
