SPANISH REGISTRATION GUIDE

Prerequisite: This course is intended for students with no prior Spanish language experience.

Course Summary: This introductory level course focuses primarily on the present tense and basic vocabulary.

Topics:

• vocabulary: greetings, numbers,  telling time, classroom items, family, colors, clothing, days and months, house vocabulary and weather
• verb tense(s): all regular and irregular present tense (including reflexive verbs) and the present progressive

Puntos de Partida textbook: Chapter 1 through Chapter 6

Prerequisite: This course is intended for students who have successfully completed Span 1100 (Beginning Spanish I) or have completed 1 – 2 years of high school Spanish within the last two years.

Course Summary: This beginning level course emphasizes the two past tenses, the preterite and the imperfect, and the contrast in use between the two.

Topics:

• vocabulary: food and restaurants, travel, holidays, pastimes and chores, health and well-being
• verb tense(s): all regular and irregular preterite and imperfect, formal commands

Puntos de Partida textbook: Chapter 7 through Chapter 11

Prerequisite: This course is intended for students who have successfully completed Span 1200 (Beginning Spanish II) or have completed 2 – 3 years of high school Spanish within the last two years.

Course Summary: This intermediate level course focuses on the formation and uses of the present subjunctive, as well as the compound tenses. A review of the formation and uses of the preterite and imperfect is another important aspect of the course.

Topics:

• vocabulary: pressures of daily life, housing, the arts, nature and the environment
• verb tense(s) / mood(s): the present subjunctive, the present perfectindicative and subjunctive, informal commands

Puntos de Partida textbook: Chapter 12 through Chapter 15

Prerequisite: This course is intended for students who have successfully completed Span 2100 (Intermediate Spanish I) or have completed 4 – 5 years of high school Spanish within the last two years.

Course Summary: This intermediate level course focuses on more complex compound tenses, as well as the passive voice. Students will review all tenses through selected readings in Spanish.

Topics:

• vocabulary: social life and relationships, the workplace, current events, traveling abroad
• verb tense(s): imperfect subjunctive, future, conditional, future perfect, conditional perfect, past perfect subjunctive
